More than 5,000 drawings were produced from the design of Gustave Eiffel, a respected and legendary designer of cast-iron structures, who won a competition for the best design. His other works include places of worship, viaducts and bridges worldwide. The Eiffel tower was one of his most tricky creations and was never designated to be a long term landmark. At the time, it generated extensive criticism, with many claiming that not only did it ruin the skyline of the metropolis but was likely hazardous.
